Announcing APA Guide to Best Practices in Establishing and Running Summer Diversity Institutes.

American Philosophical Association.

Dear DAVID,

We are pleased to announce the public release of The APA Guide to Best Practices in Establishing and Running Summer Diversity Institutes in Philosophy. This guide, developed under the guidance of the Diversity Institute Advisory Panel, will allow universities or philosophical institutes to launch their own summer diversity institute.

Summer diversity institutes in philosophy encourage undergraduate students from groups currently underrepresented in the discipline (including but not limited to women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, first-generation college students, and people from economically disadvantaged communities) to pursue graduate studies and undertake an academic career in philosophy. These summer programs typically range from seven to ten days and host ten to twenty students per session. They require the efforts of graduate students and faculty organizers and the backing of an institution. This guide details the roles of individuals involved in diversity institutes and how to create an educational and welcoming environment for students, as well as the more technical processes of funding an institute, designing the application process, assessing the institute, and more.

This guide, along with other resources and links related to diversity institutes, is available on the APA’s Diversity Institute Resources page. Please direct any questions related to this guide or diversity institutes to APA Program Assistant, Lucy Pawliczek, at lucypawliczek@apaonline.org.

All the best,

Amy Ferrer
Executive Director

DUTY. JENNIFER WEXTON.

David, recent events have made this much clear:

In the face of a racist and corrupt administration, it’s absolutely critical that we have a legislative body that will be there to hold them accountable.

I cast two votes last week that I took no pleasure in, but did so out of duty. Last Tuesday, I voted to officially condemn Donald Trump’s xenophobic tweets. And last Thursday, I voted to hold Attorney General Barr and Commerce Secretary Ross in criminal contempt for their obstruction of Congressional investigations into their efforts to add a discriminatory citizenship question onto the census.

My seat is a must-hold for Democrats if we want to keep the House majority. And with my new opponent already running ads against me, we really can’t afford to fall behind on this critical budget goal.

Thank you so much,
Jennifer

Debate watch party hosts needed in... BERNIE SANDERS.

David -
Before Bernie takes the stage on Tuesday night for the second Democratic debate, we’re hoping to get as many debate watch parties as possible for our supporters.

These debate watch parties are a fun way to watch the debate, cheer on Bernie, and make connections with your community to win this election.

Hundreds of our most dedicated activists are hosting parties for other Bernie supporters in their communities — some in their homes, others in any place with a TV or internet connection. We’re hoping to get another debate watch party for Bernie supporters in Seekonk.

Hosting a debate watch party is incredibly important for electing Bernie – they help people hear Bernie's message on national television, and then become active volunteers in your community.

Your first step is choosing a location for your event. Most supporters like you open up their homes or host in another venue with a television or internet connection.

Once you sign up, you’ll be able to set a limit for the number of guests who can RSVP, choose whether to list your event as public or private, and email your guests telling them what to bring.

You’ll also receive a guide with all of the information you’ll need to make your event a success.

This is an important thing you can do to help organize for Bernie. Can you host a debate watch party on Tuesday?

In solidarity,
Team Bernie

ESQUIRE MAGAZINE. The Mueller Hearing Just Illustrated the One Reason Trump Wasn't Charged.

One thing to keep in mind watching former Special Counsel Robert Mueller testify before Congress this fine Wednesday—which primarily consists of him responding, "I would refer you to the report"—is that more than 1,000 former federal prosecutors have signed a letter declaring that, based on the evidence in the Mueller Report, Donald Trump would have been charged with obstruction of justice if he were not the president. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel has maintained a position that a sitting president cannot be indicted. As a result, the Report does not make a determination either way on whether Trump obstructed justice, but is explicitly clear that it "does not exonerate" the president.
